Sigerson Cup: Slick UUJ through to semi battle

UUJ 2-19 Carlow IT 1-8: UUJ strode impressively through to today’s Sigerson Cup semi-final meeting with NUI Maynooth following this handsome quarter-final victory over Carlow IT at Belfield, Dublin yesterday.

Jason McAnulla (Tyrone) and Conor McManus (Monaghan) scored the UUJ goals while Red Hands trio Peter Hughes, Ciaran McGinley and Matthew Donnelly each contributed three points with the accurate McManus complementing his goal with four points.

UUJ led by 1-10 to 1-5 at half-time but launched a third quarter scoring blitz that left their opponents floundering.

Armagh’s Brendan Donaghy was majestic at full-back, Niall Holly (Derry) and skipper Colm Murney (Down) were on top at midfield while the half-back line of Kevin Dyas (Armagh), Donal Morgan (Down) and Ciaran McGinley (Tyrone) completely snuffed out the Carlow half-forward division.

NUI Maynooth just managed to squeeze past University of Limerick by 0-7 to 1-2 in their quarter-final.

Meanwhile, Virginia College of Cavan defeated Donegal’s St.Columba’s, Glenties in the Ulster Bank U14 Vocational Schools McDevitt Cup final in Armagh 3-16 to 3-14.

St.Joseph’s Coalisland won the under-16 Arthurs Cup, defeating St Mark’s Warrenpoint 2-7 to 0-8 at the Athletic Grounds, Armagh.
