Town denied an upset by Bryansford’s late fightback

Bryansford 1-09 Castlewellan 2-06

Bryansford forced a replay with Castlewellan in the Down Senior Football Championship with a last-gasp equalising point in injury time.

Castlewellan missed an opportunity of causing a major upset after taking an unlikely lead with two minutes left to play.

The game may ultimately have ended in disappointment for Castlewellan but it began brightly for the underdogs. Liam McKibben combined with Kevin Duffin with the latter applying the finishing touches for a Castlewellan goal after two minutes.

Bryansford fought back from the early set back to lead at the break 0-06 to 1-01.

They looked to be cruising when Conor Gribben’s goal sent Pete McGrath’s team into a 1-07 to 1-01 shortly after the break.

Duffin scored a fine individual goal and points from Paddy Boyle, Cathal Crilly and McGreevy gave Castlewellan a one point advantage with precious little time remaining. It was not to be though as substitute Colm Kearney was able to fist Danny Savage’s looping ball over the bar.
