Ulster University booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup by overcoming MTU Cork by 2-11 to 0-8 at Abbotstown last night.

The northern team led by 0-7 to 0-4 at half-time before clicking into a higher gear after the break. Goals from Niall Loughlin and Ryan Jones were to prove crucial as the UU outfit took control.

Tyrone All-Ireland winner Michael McKernan, Cavan’s imposing midfield ace and Rory Gormley all had key roles as the Ulster side cruised through the closing stages.

Indeed, the manner in which they exerted their control would suggest that more progress in the competition is imminent.

Meanwhile, St Mary’s University College bowed out of the Sigerson Cup when they lost by 2-6 to 0-10 to Maynooth University at the Davitts club in Belfast yesterday.

What made defeat a particularly bitter pill for St Mary’s to swallow was the fact that they led by 0-9 to 0-4 at the interval before floundering in the second-half.
