Victory for Galway takes the heat off Kernan
Galway 1-20 Monaghan 1-14
Galway manager Joe Kernan can now view the three-week National Football League recess in a relieved frame of mind following his team’s victory over pointless Monaghan at Salthill yesterday.
“It’s good to get the couple of points under our belts but it’s also very encouraging to have scored 1-20,” said Kernan afterwards.
“We still have a number of players to come back to us from club commitments and injuries and hopefully this will prove a help when the league campaign resumes.”
The Tribesmen enjoyed a three-point interval lead (0-12 to 0-9) with Nicky Joyce, Seanie Armstrong and Michael Meehan sharing the bulk of the scoring honours up until then but just when Monaghan looked as if they might take control in the second-half, the accurate Paul Finlay received a second yellow card in the 58th minute and from then on they were always battling against the odds.
Indeed, Finlay had done much to keep Monaghan’s hopes alive and had pointed a brace of frees just before his departure.
And even though Brendan McKenna subsequently fired in a Monaghan goal it was to prove a false dawn as the ever-dangerous Joyce put the seal on an impressive personal performance by blasting in a late goal that cemented Galway’s dominance of the closing stages.
\[Michael McCready\]While Kernan take heart from his team’s performance, Monaghan boss Seamus McEnaney and his No 2 Paul Grimley, the man who many thought would land the Armagh manager’s job, are left to contemplate disappointing back-to-back defeats that do not bode well for their forthcoming confrontations with teams of the calibre of Tyrone, Derry, Kerry, Mayo and Dublin in what is proving an intensely competitive Division One.
