Galligan fails to progress

Ireland's Rose-Anne Galligan was unable to progress from the 800 metres heats at the World Championships.

A day after Rob Heffernan's historic gold medal in the 50km race walk, the Newbridge AC runner had hoped to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

However, Galligan could only finish seventh in a time of two minutes 02.05 seconds in her heat.

"I was ranked 28th coming into the championships and knew only 16 would progress, so I knew I had a very slim chance of getting through, but I was determined," she said.

"I'll learn from this race. I'll take it as motivation into next year for the World Indoors and European outdoors. I gave it all I had out there today and I am proud of myself for that."

Ireland's final competitor in Moscow is Paul Pollock, who goes in the marathon on Saturday.
