Clarke slumps to joint last place
Open champion Darren Clarke came back down to earth with a bump in the opening round of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron.
Paired with Tiger Woods for the former world number one's return to golf, Clarke slumped to joint last place in the 76-man field with a seven over par 77.
And that despite producing the shot of the day, a holed 183-yard approach to the eighth for an eagle two.
The Ulsterman was already three over when that happened and afterwards he came home in a six over 41 that included going in the lake for a double bogey seven on the 16th and more dropped shots on the final two holes.
There was better news for Rory McIlroy who managed to record a two-under par 68 to leave him six shots behind leader Adam Scott.
On a day of low scoring Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell could only shoot one over 71s.
