Northern Ireland golfer Darren Clarke has missed out on becoming the first British or Irish player to win both the Open and the Senior Open.

The 50-year-old shot a one over par final round at the Senior Open at Royal Lytham, finishing the tournament on level par - six shots behind the winner, Bernhard Langer.

The Dungannon man looked in good form with an eagle at the seventh on Sunday, however a double bogey on 12 saw him slip down the leaderboard.

Victory for Clarke would have seen him become the first British or Irish player to win the Open double, and the fourth player to in the world to complete the accolade. He won the Open in 2011.

He shot two successive 68 rounds to go into day three in third place, however he dropped shots in the final two rounds to finish up short in joint-tenth place.

Langer was able to split away from the pack as he birdied six of his opening 14 holes and held on despite two late bogeys.
