How a piece of furniture inspired Rory McIlroy to sparkling opening round in Dubai
Rory McIlroy has revealed that a piece of furniture installed by his wife in their new home has served as inspiration in his drive for more Majors success.
As he continued his blistering 2019 form with a stunning 64 in the DP World Tour Championship, the Irishman says that a new trophy cabinet could spur him on to even more glory in 2020.
"We didn't have much time to get a lot of stuff organised but when I back to the house the last time, Erica had a trophy cabinet put in," said McIlroy, competing for the richest purse in golf history in Dubai.
"I had obviously seen all the trophies before but when you see the Claret Jug and the US PGA trophies and everything else in the one place, it kind of inspires you to go and get more of them."
McIlroy is primed to add another to the shelf following his blistering 64 to set an early pace as the man from Jupiter (Florida) landed on Earth (the Dubai course designed by Greg Norman is called the Earth Course).
It included an approach to the 14th which he labelled his "best shot of the year" in a region where he first burst on to the scene as a teenager a decade ago.
"Sometimes when I don't push things, that's when the lowest scores come and that’s how it felt for me today."
