Home Internationals: Ulster boys are ready for England

Irish Amateur and North of Ireland champion Alan Dunbar will lead Ireland’s challenge at next month’s Home Internationals at Ashburnham in Wales.

Rathmore player Dunbar is one of five Ulstermen on the 11-strong team aiming to relieve England of their title.

The others are Paul Cutler from Portstewart, Moyola Park’s Luke Lennox and Banbridge pair Connor Doran and Rory Leonard.

After his North of Ireland win at Royal Portrush earlier this month, Dunbar secured a place at this week’s 3 Irish Open at Killarney. He will play the first two rounds with fellow amateur Cain Curley and Belfast professional Damian Mooney.

Kevin Phelan is an interesting selection for the Home International team.

Originally from Waterford, he is currently living in America, where he attends the University of North Florida.

Phelan managed to make the field for the US Open at Pebble Beach with a qualifying round of 65. He has had three top five and eight top ten finishes so far in his college season and also reached the semi-finals of the Florida State Match Play.

Ireland: Barry Anderson (Co Sligo), Paul Cutler (Portstewart), Connor Doran (Banbridge), Alan Dunbar (Rathmore), Paul Dunne (Greystones), Luke Lennox (Moyola Park), Rory Leonard (Banbridge), Dara Lernihan (Castle), Eddie McCormack (Galway), Pat Murray (Limerick), Kevin Phelan (University of North Florida).
