Galgorm’s Joshua Hill admits he thought he blew his chance to win a first Bridgestone Tour event after a late collapse in wet and wild conditions at the Mullingar Scratch Trophy, but a remarkable comeback saw him clinch victory in Westmeath.
The teen, who started the final round with a five-shot lead, looked to have thrown it away with back-to-back double-bogeys midway through his back nine. However, birdies at the 17th and 18th saw him claim a one-shot win over Max Kennedy (Royal Dublin) and Brandon St. John (Portmarnock) at eight-under.
“I had a few unlucky breaks this afternoon, and the weather didn’t help either. I was nervous coming up to 18, the adrenaline was pumping,” explained a relieved Hill.
“I can’t believe I came back to win. I thought I threw it away after 12 and 13 but knew I had a small chance by keeping an eye on the leaderboard. I’m just happy to get over the line.”
