Inconsistent Olivia Mehaffey needs to up her game for tilt at title

By Phil Casey

Royal County Down star Olivia Mehaffey remains in contention at the European Ladies' Amateur Championship at Lausanne, Switzerland - but must up her game to challenge for the title.

After opening with a one-over 73, the Arizona State University star made three birdies and two bogeys for a 71 yesterday.

That leaves her on level-par 144 at the halfway stage, seven shots behind leaders Albane Valenzuela (Switzerland) and Zhen Bontan (Netherlands).

Clandeboye's Jessica Ross faces a decisive third round to make the top 60 and ties to avoid today's cut after carding 73, which leaves her on three-over par, one shot ahead of the current cut mark.

Meanwhile, Michael Hoey is on course to miss the cut at the European Open after an opening seven-over-par 79 left him 13 shots behind leader Richard McEvoy.

And elsewhere, John Ross Galbraith has been offered a spot in this year's Northern Ireland Open at Galgorm Manor.

The event gets under way on August 10.
