County Down golfer Olivia Mehaffey has received an invitation to compete in the Augusta National Women's Amateur Championship for a second time.

Mehaffey will return to the hallowed Georgia course for the tournament, which is the first women's event ever to be played at Augusta, in April.

The World No.19 amateur posted a picture of her invitation from Augusta National chairman Fred S Ridley on Instagram with the caption: "Nice surprise to arrive back to in America. Grateful for the opportunity to return to this amazing event #anwa"

The tournament is played across two venues, with the full field of 72 players competing in the first two rounds played at the nearby Champions Retreat Golf Club on the Wednesday and Thursday.

A practice round is held at Augusta National on Friday for all 72 players, with the final round seeing only the top-30 after Thursday's second round returning to the championship course.

21-year-old Mehaffey finished 23rd in last year's inaugural event, which was won by America's Jennifer Kupcho, but will have her sights set on walking away with victory this year.

Mehaffey is coming off a sensational 2019 which saw her win three tournaments and soar into the top-20 of the world amateur rankings in the process.

Representing Arizona State University, the Co Down golfer walked away with the titles at the Bruin Wave Invitational, Pac-12 Championship and NCAA Norman Regional last year.

Her achievements saw her named in the Golfweek & WGCA All-American Second Team, becoming just the sixth Sun Devil to win three titles in one season.

As well as that, Mehaffey was named a WGCA All-American Scholar and was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team and Pac-12 All-Conference First Team.

Earning an invite back to Augusta is an excellent way to start the new year, with Mehaffey set for a big 2020 to back up what was a fantastic 12 months just gone by.

The Ireland international is into her final semester as a senior at Arizona State and will return to action when the Sun Devils take on Denver and UCLA in a one-day event on Sunday, January 26.
