McIlroy four back in Akron

Rory McIlroy came home in 33 to climb to four under par at the halfway stage of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Akron's Firestone course, four shots off the lead.

Australians Adam Scott and Jason Day were the first day leaders. They kicked off with superb rounds of 62 and 63, but both shot 70 on Friday.

Scott had to settle for a four-way tie for the halfway lead with Americans Rickie Fowler, Ryan Moore and PGA Tour rookie Keegan Bradley, playing the first World Golf Championship of his career.

Open champion Darren Clarke was left propping up the 76-man field on 11 over after improving only three on his initial 77.

Padraig Harrington (70) was one over par for the tournament, while Graeme McDowell (72) was three over.
