Michael Hoey secures second European Tour title

Michael Hoey won the Madeira Open Michael Hoey claimed his second European Tour title yesterday with a two-stroke victory at the Madeira Islands Open.

The Belfast man, who had shared the overnight lead with England’s Jamie Elson, added to his score with birdies at the eighth and 14th holes to take the top prize of €116,660.

His only blemish came with a dropped shot on the par-three 13th, but a final round of 71 saw him finish clear of his rivals on 10 under for the tournament.

The 32-year-old said: “It was just very, very tough. I had to dig really deep, especially after I hit one in the rocks on 13, and I thought ‘that's it now, I've thrown this thing away completely’.

“It's a crazy game. But I somehow managed to make a good swing on the third shot and holed the putt for bogey which was huge, it kept me in it.”

Hoey also won the Estoril Portuguese Open in 2009.

Elson had to settle for a share of second place with compatriot Chris Gane after posting three birdies against four bogeys on the final day.

  • Luke Donald, denied the world number one spot in a play-off a month ago, just missed out on it again yesterday when Ian Poulter beat him in the final of the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain.

Donald was trying for an unprecedented match play double after taking the Accenture title in Arizona in February, but his fellow Englishman triumphed 2&1 at Finca Cortesin.

So Donald stays second behind Lee Westwood and Poulter celebrated his son Luke's seventh birthday in the way he hoped — although not the moment when he fell down a bank trying to thrash his way out of a bush.

“Happy birthday Luke,” he said. “I thought it would be pretty special to win this today. I finally started holing some putts. You have to hole putts to win.”
