Northern lights are dimming for Rory

By Adam McKendry

Rory McIlroy's FedEx Cup push endured a rough start as the Ulsterman carded a three-over par 73 to begin his Northern Trust Open bid, leaving him nine shots off the lead.

The World No.4, who decided to compete instead of taking time off to recover from injury, recorded six bogeys and three birdies at Glen Oaks Club, New York.

McIlroy, who is 44th in the FedEx Cup standings, needs a good finish this week to get into the top-30 and reach the season-ending Tour Championship.
