Olivia Mehaffey is off to a great start in her bid to earn playing rights on the Ladies’ European Tour next season as she carded a two-under 71 in her opening round of Q-School in La Manga.

The Co Down woman mixed six birdies with two bogeys and a double bogey on the South Course on the first day in Spain to sit in a share of third, with the top 75 qualifying for the Final Stage of Q-School at the same venue next week.

Mehaffey already has limited status on the US second-tier Symetra Tour for next season, but earning additional starts in Europe will aid her in her bid to make the step up onto the LPGA Tour as soon as possible.

Clandeboye’s Victoria Craig, who has played mainly in the LET Access Series, is also inside the cut mark in La Manga but she is right on the line in a share of 71st after a four-over 75 on the North Course that saw her combine two birdies and six bogeys.

Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell rounds off his year at the team-event QBE Shootout in Naples, Florida where he is paired alongside Canada’s Corey Conners. They begin their first round at 3pm UK time this afternoon.
