McIlroy on the charge at PGA Championship

By Adam McKendry

Rory McIlroy is only two shots off the early lead held by Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen at the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, NC after 10 holes of his opening round.

The World No.4 is at -2 after an eventful front nine where he chipped in from behind the green at the 3rd for a birdie, but dropped shots at the 4th and 6th, before recording back-to-back birdies at the par-five 7th and the par-four 8th.

The Ulsterman added a further birdie at the par-five 10th to move into the top-10 of the leaderboard.

McIlroy is one of the favourites for the final Major of the year having succeeded around Quail Hollow twice before in 2010 and 2015 at the Wells Fargo Championship, as well as holding the course record of 61.

Fellow countryman Graeme McDowell is a shot behind McIlroy at -1 thru 7 for his round, while Irishmen Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington suffered poor starts to their Major pushes and sit at +3 and +8 respectively.
