PGA in Ireland's top three pros to compete for big prize at Walled City of Derry Pro Am

Three of the top PGA in Ireland professionals will compete for a big prize-fund at the Walled City of Derry Pro Am later this month.

Damien McGrane, David Higgins and Simon Thornton, who currently sit as the top three players in this season's Order of Merit, will tee off at the tournament on August 26 and 27.

For the first time ever, both City of Derry Golf Club and Foyle International Golf Centre will be getting in on the action on both days as the pros compete for the 15,000 euro prize pot and the Michael Doherty Trophy, named after the former city of Derry professional, who sadly passed away in December.

With 66 teams and a total of 264 golfers set to play, not only is it the biggest Pro Am tournament in Northern Ireland but also the only two course Pro Am tournament in the region.

Michael McCumiskey, secretary of the PGA in Ireland, said: "This event will attract the top Irish PGA Professionals from all over Ireland. They will be competing against each other for the title and guaranteed prize pot of 15000 euros whilst teams of three amateurs will compete alongside the professional for the coveted team Prize.  The event will have both Ladies and Gents sections."

There will also be a junior event on Friday August 25 from 6-8pm at Foyle Glf Academy. Run by PGA Professionals, Derek Morrison and Sean Young, the event is open to young people aged 6-14, from beginners to keen golfers. Registration is essential as places are limited. Call 028 7135 3366 to book.

Other highlights on Saturday and Sunday include a nine-hole Par Three challenge at Foyle Golf Center open to GUI members and non GUI members of all age groups and a Hole-In-One fundraising event to support CLIC Sargent.

Visit Derry in partnership with Derry City and Strabane District Council are sponsoring the tournament.
