Rory McIlroy will indulge in his other major passion to celebrate winning his fourth major - by parading his trophies around his beloved Manchester United's ground for the opening game of their season.

Before that, he's heading off to New York to party with friends before flying back to Old Trafford to show off the Wanamaker trophy and the Claret Jug from his Open victory.

Amazing, awesome, phenomenal, brilliant are just some of the superlatives being used to describe the golf hero after his latest triumph.

From celebrities to sports commentators, politicians to Joe Public, fans have paid tribute to the world's number one after his nail-biting US PGA triumph.

Peter Robinson and Martin McGuinness jumped on the bandwagon, describing Rory as a "sporting sensation".

With four major titles now under his belt, it's proving increasingly difficult to find new words to describe the boy wonder.

Following his drama-filled win at Valhalla early yesterday morning, Belfast Telegraph group sports editor Jim Gracey referred to the 25-year-old as "magnificent" and "stupendous".

Fellow Co Down man and Snow Patrol lead singer Gary Lightbody believes a knighthood now beckons for the golf superstar.

"Well done again Rory. Just amazing," he said.

"Great to see someone from Norn Iron on top of the world. Sir Rory McIlroy surely soon! @McIlroyRory."

Former Open champion Darren Clarke added his praise. "Well done @McIlroyRory ... awesome! #NornIron #SUFTUM" he said.

Fellow golfing great Graeme McDowell tweeted: "Winner of the GMac swag was @IrishHusker5 with the first correct prediction of winner Rory McIlroy and -16. What a finish!!!"

Presenter Gary Lineker called McIlroy a champion and said golf was an inspirational sport.

"Just watched the USPGA finale and @McIlroyRory's win," he said.

"Must say golf is the most sporting of all sports. Others could learn much.

"What a champion @McIlroyRory has become. An all-time great in his sport at the age of 25. And a delightful bloke to boot."

This Morning and Sky News host and fellow Man U fanatic Eamonn Holmes added his praise on Twitter.

He said: "While you have been sleeping @McIlroyRory has been amazing. Winner of #USPGAChampionship."

Presenter Stephen Nolan added: "Northern Ireland. Home to one of the greatest sportsmen of all time @McIlroyRory. Isn't it nice to be able to say that without exaggerating!"
