Knock’s Katie Poots cruised to a seven-shot victory at the Munster Women & Girls’ Senior Open at Tipperary as the only player in the field to finish under par.

The Ulster teen had a commanding lead heading into yesterday’s final day after some sensational golf in the opening two rounds on Thursday, backing up a two-under 71 with a six-under 67 to sit eight under and lead by seven.

Just needing to finish solidly, Poots added a two-over 75 in her final round to ease to the title, finishing seven shots clear of Royal Tara’s Hannah Guerin and Ballykisteen’s Lauren Kelly.

The Knock girl has been in fine form recently, reaching the knockouts at the Irish Close and finishing fourth at the Leinster Girls’, but this is her first tournament victory.

At the European Ladies’ Team Championships at Royal County Down, Ulster duo Annabel Wilson and Beth Coulter combined for their second foursomes win of the week but Ireland lost 3-2 to Denmark and will face Spain in the seventh/eighth play-off.

In the men’s equivalent at PGA Catalunya, Malone’s Matthew McClean helped Ireland to a 3.5-1.5 win over Portugal after picking up a second foursomes win of his own alongside Robert Moran, and they will face Italy in today’s Flight B final.

Meanwhile, Castlerock’s David Mulholland finished second at the Senior Amateur Open at Ganton, one shot behind America’s Gene Elliott.
