Revealed: 21 Ulster courses make Golf Digest list of Ireland's top 100 courses for 2018

How many can you play this year?

Golf Digest have named their top 100 golf courses in Ireland for 2018 with Royal County Down and Royal Portrush's Dunluce Links holding on to their places as the top two.

Ballyliffin's Glashedy Links moves up one place to 10th following improvements made ahead of this summer's Irish Open.

In total, there are 21 Ulster courses in this year's top 100.

Portstewart's Strand Course is the next Ulster course to feature, holding its place in 15th. Ballyliffin's Old Course stays 18th while Donegal GC's Murvagh Links is still 21st with Portsalon in 22nd.

Rosapenna's Sandyhills is down one to 25th while Lough Erne is down four to 31st. Rosapenna's Old Tom Morris Course is up two to 33rd while Concra Wood remains 34th. Slieve Russell is back up one to 38 while Castlerock and Malone come in 42 and 43 respectively.

Belvoir is 49th and Royal Portrush's Valley Course sneaks into the top half. Royal Belfast is at 56 while Clandeboye comes in 63rd and Galgorm Castle at 67. Ardglass is at 79 and Roe Park enters the top 100 on the mark.

Royal County Down, of course, was named as the number one course in Golf Digest's World 100 Greatest Golf Courses list in January.

The list, sponsored by Volvo, is made by two panels; one made up of industry experts and the second of 80 Golf Digest readers. Over 2,400 people applied to earn a spot on that panel and the 80 lucky golfers had the tough task of playing some of the 140 courses on the shortlist.

"All 18-hole golf clubs across the country were contacted to see if any upgrade work has been undertaken over the previous 12 months or to see if they felt their previous position in the rankings was not justified," said the magazine.

"All replies were put onto a list, combined with last year’s Top 100 golf courses along with the top 40 golf courses which did not make it into last year’s rankings. This list became our definitive assessment list and each golf course was assessed numerous times throughout the year.

"The reader’s panel was based on gender, handicap and geographical location. Our aim was to find a female golfer and three male golfers, who had a low, mid and high handicap in each geographical location across Ireland.

"Once selected a team of 80 readers undertook their briefing to generate over 1,600 reports and ranking scores, which accounted for 25 percent of the final vote."
