Rory McIlroy in contention after opening round 65 in first PGA Tour play-off event
Rory McIlroy is well in contention after an opening round 65 at The Northern Trust, the first of the PGA Tour's play-off events.
McIlroy is six under after his first round, three shots behind leader Troy Merritt after the morning session in Jersey City.
The Holywood golfer, starting on the 10th, got off to a bad start with a bogey at his first hole.
However, his round was kick-started when, after a birdie at the par four 12th, he carded an eagle at the par five 13th. Leaving himself 213 yards over the water, McIlroy struck a perfect iron to set up a 20 foot birdie putt that he rolled into the middle of the cup.
A further four birdies with any more drop shots and McIlroy was sitting pretty after the first round.
Tiger Woods, however, struggled to a four over par 75.
