Rory McIlroy turned on the style in his back nine on Friday at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The world number eight shot a five under par second round 68 in Kapalua to sit -9 for the week and three shots behind leader Gary Woodland.

A bogey on the fourth after a penalty drop set McIlroy back to -3 for the week but he rallied to card six birdies in his closing 14 holes without dropping another shot to rattle through the leaderboard.

"It has been a nice start to the year," McIlroy said. "It is something to build on going into the weekend. I just need to keep hitting good golf shots and giving myself chances."

Leader Woodland was level par at the turn of his second round but carded a stunning six birdies on the back nine to lead by three going into the weekend.

McIlroy begins his third round at 8.35pm GMT.
