Rory McIlroy well placed after first round at PGA Tour's Wells Fargo Championship

Rory McIlroy briefly tied the clubhouse lead when he carded a three-under-par 68 in his opening round at the Wells Fargo Championship.

American Peter Malnati soon birdied his final hole of the day to get in at -4 but nonetheless, McIlroy is left well-placed at Quail Hollow in the Holywood golfer's first tournament since a disappointing final round at the Masters last month.

Starting on the 10th, McIlroy began his round brightly with three birdies in his opening six holes.

Bogeys at his ninth and 15th holes stunted his progress but further birdies on his 11th and 16th holes of the day helped the world number seven round in 68.

McIlroy's fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell tees off at 6pm BST while Tiger Woods also plays his first tournament since the Masters, teeing off at 5.50pm BST.
