Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell have been touted as the possible European Ryder Cup captain after it was confirmed the 2026 tournament is returning to the Republic of Ireland.

As revealed in yesterday's Belfast Telegraph, the tournament is to be held at Adare Manor in 2026.

European Tour bosses confirmed the Limerick course as the Republic's first host venue since the K Club in 2006.

And it was there that Clarke helped Europe to victory over the United States on a wave of emotion with the tournament coming not long after the death of his first wife, Heather.

The 2011 Open champion was captain of the side at Hazeltine in 2016 but from being an outsider to take the role at Adare Manor quickly came in on the betting yesterday.

Padraig Harrington, a three-time Major winner who will lead Europe at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin in 2020, is joint favourite at 5/2 alongside Paul McGinley who captained Europe to victory at Gleneagles in 2014.

McDowell (39) is also a contender, while other names in the frame include Spain's Sergio Garcia and Englishman Lee Westwood.

The news, coming hot on the heels of Shane Lowry's Open win at Royal Portrush, is another fantastic boost for golf on the island.
