Olivia Mehaffey will take plenty of learnings from her second Major of the year, but her US Open challenge came to an end at the halfway mark after missing the cut in Texas.
The 23-year-old amateur managed a one-over 72 in her second round at Champion Golf Club in Houston - this time on the Cypress Creek course - but that wasn't enough to prevent her heading home early at seven-over for her two rounds.
Mehaffey started well with a birdie at the second, but she couldn't add to that and, instead, dropped shots at the eighth and 11th holes to finish over par.
The damage had been done in her six-over 77 on Thursday, leaving the Royal County Down woman to play catch-up in her effort to make the weekend and ultimately leaving herself too much work to do.
She will be encouraged, however, by Arizona State team-mate Linn Grant, who is at the top of the leaderboard, while it is more valuable learning experience prior to her inevitable professional career.
Meanwhile, on the European Tour, Graeme McDowell withdrew from the season-ending DP World Tour Championship on the final hole of his second round. The Rathmore man was four-over for the day and five-over for the tournament.
Race to Dubai leader Patrick Reed holds a two shot lead over Matthew Fitzpatrick at 10-under going into the weekend.
