Olivia Mehaffey's hopes of making US Open cut still alive after opening round
Olivia Mehaffey is still in with a chance of making her first cut at a major after her first round at the US Women's Open.
The Tandragee GC amateur golfer, who only discovered she would be playing in the tournament on Sunday, carded a four over par 76 at Shoal Creek, Alabama. With the cut-mark currently sitting at two-over, Mehaffey could still make it through to the weekend with a positive second round.
Mehaffey, who is currently in a tie for 96th, opened with back-to-back bogeys before birdies and the sixth and the ninth sandwiched a bogey and an unwanted double.
Another birdie at the 11th left her two over par but bogeys at the 13th and 17th saw Olivia slip back beyond the projected cut line.
Mehaffey made it through to play in her third major after securing a first alternate spot in qualifying and finally getting the call last weekend.
There is a three-way tie for the lead on -5 with Michelle Wie hot on their heels on -3, alongside amateur Linn Grant.
