Warrenpoint on verge of double trophy triumph

By Paul Kelly

Warrenpoint are on the brink of double success in the AIG Cups and Shields at Carton House.

With the Barton Shield title secure, the Co Down club are now hoping to add the Jimmy Bruen Shield to their collection.

In yesterday's semi-final they proved too strong for Leinster club, Mountrath, winning by 3.5 to 1.5 to set up a clash with Castlebar GC this morning.

Rian Carvill and John Murray combined for a comprehensive 5&3 victory and further wins followed for Gerard Durkin and Shane Carr, and Hudson McGuffin and Barry Laverty.

Royal Portrush failed to make progress in the Senior Cup losing 3.5 to 1.5 by Galway. Luke O'Neill put Galway on the board with a 3&2 win against Mark McMurray in the top match.

Andrew Morris clawed one back with a win over Ronan Mullarney but when Luke Nolan beat Garth McGimpsey, Galway edged closer, and their place was secure when veteran Joe Lyons edged Matt McAlpin by one hole.
