Hockey: Saints' star Fin stays cool to deny Omagh

By John Flack

Saintfield made it three wins out of three and nine points out of nine on Saturday as they consolidated their position at the top of the Senior Two table with a hard fought 2-1 win over Omagh at the Co Down venue.

But it took a brilliant double save in the dying minutes from Saints keeper Graeme Finlay to deny battling Omagh a point.

Finlay got in the way of a Chris Martin piledriver to clinch his team maximum points.

Nigel Jackson gave the home team the lead when he scored from the penalty spot in the first half.

And when team captain Matt Owen (left) doubled the lead to leave it 2-0 at the break it looked like game over.

But instead of putting the foot on the accelerator Saints almost blew it when they conceded a goal after the restart.

Then came that fabulous intervention from Finlay and there was as much a sense of relief as delight at the final whistle.

On Saturday Saintfield face a potentially tougher challenge when they travel to Ballycastle to play Portrush who were among the promotion contenders last season.
