Ards secure a vital win over Elks to climb up table

By Staff Reporter

Ards have moved out of the EY Irish Hockey League drop-zone after beating the Ulster Elks 2-0 at Londonderry Park.

The result sees the Ulster champions overtake UCC to move into eighth place in the standings.

Goals in the third quarter gave Ards a well-deserved win last night against an Elks side again missing injured Ireland captain Megan Frazer.

The Elks are now without a win in four, ironically their last victory coming in a 2-0 success over Ards in November.

Their chances of reaching the play-offs - a place in Europe is at stake - are hanging by a thread as they are now five points outside the top-three.

Ards had the better of the chances and Ireland striker Chloe Brown had a shot cleared off the line. Amy Benson saw her shot rebound off the post.

Naomi Grundie broke the deadlock in the 41st minute when she scored from a penalty corner and, three minutes later, Sara Alexander sealed the win after a flowing passing move.
