Captain Katie Larmour leads from front for Methody

By John Flack

Team captain Katie Larmour stole the show as Methodist College made an unbeaten start in their bid to lift the Kate Russell All-Ireland schoolgirls' hockey cup in Limerick yesterday

Larmour, who scored the winner in her team's Belfast Telegraph Senior Cup triumph last week, hit four of the goals as Methody drew 2-2 with holders and hosts Crescent Comprehensive and then beat Connacht champions Salerno 5-3.

Dublin side Alexandra College finished day one with maximum points after opening with two wins and today's clash with Methody will go a long way to deciding who claims the trophy.

"The atmosphere down here at the tournament is really good and sometimes it's no bad thing to go into matches 'blind' as we proved with our performances," said Larmour.

In yesterday's opener, Crescent took an early lead but goals from Anna Armstrong and Larmour made it 2-1 at the break only for the Limerick side to fight back and secure a point.

Against Salerno, Methody again trailed early on but, after Madeline Bowyer had equalised, Larmour put her team in front and then set up Susie McCollum for a third goal before half-time.

Larmour completed her hat-trick to make it 5-1 after the break before Salerno scored twice late on to add some respectability to the scoreline.

Results: Crescent 2 Methodist College 2 (K Larmour, A Armstrong); Alexandra College 2 Salerno 1; Crescent 2 Loreto Kilkenny 0; Methodist College 5 (K Larmour 3, M Bowyer, S McCollum) Salerno 3; Alexandra College 4 Loreto Kilkenny 1.

Ulster Senior Plate final: Wallace HS 1 Victoria College 1 (Wallace won 4-1 on pens).

FIXTURES: Today: Loreto Kilkenny v Methodist College (9.30am); Methodist College v Alexandra College (12.30pm);
