Erin Getty impresses on debut but Irish lose out to Germany

By Staff Reporter

Erin Getty has become Ulster's newest senior international hockey player after featuring in Ireland's two-game series with Germany which ended with a 3-1 defeat in Dusseldorf yesterday.

The BRA schoolgirl made her debut in a 3-0 loss to the Olympic bronze medallists on Wednesday after being drafted in as a late replacement for Anna O'Flanagan, who pulled out due to injury.

Randalstown player Getty had an impressive game in midfield after coming off the bench and then sat out yesterday's game in which Germany had to come from a goal down to beat the Irish, who are preparing for the final stage of qualifying for next year's World Cup.

National coach Graham Shaw said: "The first game had a lot of good phases but, after taking the lead in the second match, we faded and our decision making was poor at times."

Yesterday, Ireland went ahead through an early goal from UCD's Emma Russell but the hosts hit back almost immediately and added two more goals in the second half.
