Ireland's Under 18 boys are on top of the world

HOCKEY: Ireland's Under 18 boys are sitting top of the round-robin European Youth Championship table after chalking up their second successive win in Gasawa, Poland.

Their 4-0 victory over Wales may not have been as impressive as Monday's 8-2 success over Italy but it keeps Graham Shaw's lads on course to gain promotion to the top tier at this level of competition.

It was two goals inside a 50-second spell in the first half that paved the way for the win over Wales, with Gareth Wilkinson's reverse putting them ahead and Harry Morris getting the second from close range.

After the break Lee Cole followed up from a penalty corner to get Ireland's third while Morris got his second of the day after a breakaway.

Today is rest day but the Irish resume tomorrow at 2pm when they take on Switzerland, with their final games against two of their main rivals, Russia and hosts Poland, later in the week.
