Irish Under-21 squad aim to maintain top flight status

By Graham Hamilton

Ireland Under-21 coach Jonny Caren is hoping his players can make an impression at the EuroHockey Junior Championships in Valencia at the end of this month - even though he has lost seven through either injury or promotion to the senior squad.

Caren remains optimistic that his side - which includes Lisnagarvey trio Ryan Getty, Peter McKibben and Daniel Nelson as well as Matthew Crookshanks (Annadale) and Kyle Marshall (Banbridge/Beeston) - can retain their Division A status.

"We have an extremely tight-knit group that work well together on and off the pitch and our focus is on retaining our top-flight status to enable Junior World Cup qualification next time round," he said.

The Irish are in Pool B with Germany, Austria and Belgium, with England, Netherlands, Spain and Portugal in Pool A.

The series starts on Monday, August 28 and runs through to Sunday, September 3.
