Late goals take shine off a strong performance from Irish women
England 5-2 Ireland
Ireland's women fell to a 5-2 defeat against an England side which included numerous Olympic gold medallists in the first game of the three-match series at Bisham Abbey yesterday.
However, it was an impressive display against strong opposition, who scored two of their goals in the final quarter to add some gloss to the scoreline.
Ireland are using the series, which continues against Great Britain today (4.30pm) and England again on Thursday, as part of their preparation for the World Cup in London in July.
The hosts led 2-0 early on after converting two penalty corners but Nikki Evans pulled one back after being set up by Lena Tice at another set-piece.
Ulster's Zoe Wilson equalised early in the third quarter from a narrow angle but GB added a third before wrapping things up with those two late goals in the final period.
