Omagh to appeal after late drama in Senior Cup game
You just can't keep umpires out of the hockey headlines these days.
While the top-flight officials continue their dispute with the Hockey Ireland, Omagh are to lodge an appeal after a controversial incident at the end of their Senior Cup match with Ballymena at Campsie.
Omagh allege that they were told the result was 2-2 after claiming a stoppage-time penalty-corner was raised above the legal level by a Ballymena player before entering the net.
However, the club claims that, after a consultation with his colleague, the umpire altered the result and awarded a 3-2 win to the visiting Ballymena team.
An Omagh spokeswoman stated: "We will be launching an appeal to Ulster Hockey and copying in the chair of the Umpires' Association as we don't believe an official can change his mind after blowing the final whistle when we were told it was a 2-2 draw."
Meanwhile, Denman Ulster Shield holders Lurgan had to come from 2-0 down to beat Ballymoney 3-2.
Early goals from Jan Hamilton and Ruth Sutherland in saw the home team enter the driving-seat before Lauren Wright pulled one back before the break.
Goals in the last 11 minutes from Chloe McCann and Jo-Anne Wilson sealed the win and made it two wins from two for Lurgan.
Queen's, also have maximum points in Pool B after a penalty-stroke from Tori Hastings gave them a 1-0 away win over Dungannon.
In the remaining Pool B game, holders Randalstown got their first win of the campaign as Anna Doherty's second-half goal clinched a 1-0 victory at North Down.
