Pegasus fly flag for Ulster with Dublin joy

By John Flack

Pegasus were the only Ulster winners in yesterday's seventh round of the ET Irish Hockey League after defeating basement side Monkstown 3-0 in Dublin.

Ards went down 1-0 to Loreto at Londonderry Park while Belfast Harlequins were held to a 1-1 draw by newly-promoted Trinity at Deramore.

Pegasus are just two points behind leaders UCD after a comfortable victory over Monkstown, who remain anchored to the foot of the table without a point to their name.

Pegasus coach Ali McNeill said: "We dominated the first half and they had a little spell at the start of the second when they were on top. But after that, it was all Pegasus and we could have had a couple more goals in the final quarter."

Pegasus got off to a dream start when goals in the opening five minutes from Lucy McKee and Hannah Grieve put them in the driving-seat.

After weathering that mini-storm at the start of the second half, Grieve sealed the win when she banged home another penalty corner to make it two wins in a row for her team.

Loreto banished the memory of their last visit north when they lost 6-0 to Pegasus, as they overcame Ards with Jessica McGirr's early goal separating the teams. Belfast Harlequins had to come from a goal down to draw with Trinity after Ailish Long scored at the far post in the 27th minute after connecting with Sally Campbell's cross.

Quins were in almost total control after that setback and were rewarded with an equaliser in the 54th minute when a clever pass from Robyn Chambers was hammered home by Jenna Watt.

Belfast's Irish international midfielder Lizzie Colvin (left) said: "We were disappointed not to have won the game after so much pressure but credit to Trinity, they stuck to their game-plan and their keeper played really well."

Meanwhile, Lisnagarvey will meet Ballymena in the Senior Cup final after beating Victorians and Raphoe respectively, after identical 2-1 wins in yesterday's semi-finals at Stormont.
