Pegasus flying high after hitting Loreto for six

By John Flack

Pegasus ran in six goals without reply past Loreto at Upper Malone yesterday to move to the top of the EY Irish Hockey League table.

The Belfast side are ahead of Cork Harlequins on goal-difference after increasing their tally to 13 from four matches.

Pegasus had a comfortable 3-0 lead at half-time yesterday despite being on the back foot as Loreto missed a penalty-stroke and failed to convert four set-pieces in the opening 35 minutes.

The Dublin side came back strongly at the start of the second-half but conceded three more goals in the final 12 minutes.

Pegasus coach Ali McNeill said: "It was good to see the goals going in, unlike last season when we often failed to convert our chances."

Lucy McKee broke the deadlock with a reverse stick shot from the edge of the circle in the third minute and Loreto captain Hannah Matthews shot wide from the penalty spot 11 minutes later.

Alex Speers made it 2-0 with the aid of a deflection and then turned provider for Taite Doherty to add a third.

Michelle Harvey, Hannah Grieve and Rachael McMillan added three more goals late on to complete the rout.

Belfast Harlequins made it two wins from three after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ards at Deramore.

Jenny McAuley and Lucy Geddes scored to put Quins 2-0 up by the end of the first quarter.

Ellen Robinson reduced the deficit shortly before the break but Ards were unable to find an equaliser despite some late pressure.

Meanwhile, Dungannon have gone back to the top of the Ulster Premier League after a 2-1 win over Rainey.
