Two defeats and no goals leaves Ards bottom of pool in Euro series

By Staff Reporter

Ards made a disappointing start to their European Indoor Trophy campaign in the Czech Republic yesterday, losing their opening two matches.

The Irish champions went down 5-0 to host team Slavia Prague and then lost 2-0 to their Croatian counterparts Mladost.

The first half of both games were close as Ards keeper Naomi McKnight conceded just once in the opening 20 minutes against the Czechs and then kept it scoreless against Mladost.

But, perhaps suffering from a limited competitive build-up, things went steadily downhill after the break for the Ulster and Irish champions on both occasions.

So, no goals and just one point after two games and a lot of hard work ahead if they are to survive at this level.

Their objective is to retain their second-tier status in Europe next season after retaining their Irish crown last month.

They can still do that with the Lithuanians, Gintra Strekte Uni, next up in their final pool game today (10.20 UK time) but it will be a difficult ask.

They will then play two classification matches later today and tomorrow as they bid for the required top six finish in the eight-team tournament.
