Ulster hockey heartache as third straight title slips away

Ulster had to settle for the runners-up spot at the junior inter-pros in Cork yesterday after being denied their third title in a row by Munster on goal difference.

Louise Creighton's team drew 1-1 with their hosts yesterday, thanks to a late equaliser from Cookstown's Laura White, having won both their games on Saturday.

White scored with two minutes to go after Ulster gambled by taking off their keeper to have an extra outfield player.

That result left everything resting on the final game between Munster and Leinster with Ulster needing a scoreless draw or a defeat for the hosts.

Two goals in the last 20 minutes, however, helped Munster to a 3-1 win and the title, leaving Ulster to regret missed opportunities in the earlier game.

"Munster were very strong although we had enough chances to win the game but, unfortunately, we didn't take them," said Creighton.

Results: Saturday: Ulster 4 (L. Elliott, S. Knipe, S. Lee, N. McMillan) South East 1; Ulster 2 (L. White, N. Graham) Leinster 0; Sunday: Munster 1 Ulster 1 (L. White).

Final placings: 1. Munster 7pts; 2. Ulster 7; 3. Leinster 3; 4. South East 0.
