I can still turn this around, says McIlroy

By Phil Casey

Rory McIlroy's putting problems had the four-time Major winner talking to himself as he suffered a disappointing second round in the £5.3m Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

The Ulsterman, who won this title in 2016 but has missed the cut in four of the last five years, struggled on the greens at Ballyliffin for the second day in succession as he carded three birdies and four bogeys.

The resulting 73 left tournament host McIlroy on one-under, seven shots off joint leaders Ryan Fox, Matthieu Pavon and Erik van Rooyen.

"The game felt okay but I didn't hole anything again on the greens," McIlroy said. "It tested my patience and I was mumbling to myself walking from the 18th.

"All I can do is give myself chances and not get frustrated. If I can keep knocking on the door, hopefully it will turn around."
