Belfast Giants netminder Tyler Beskorowany admits they were hoping to avoid the Dundee Stars in the Elite League Play-Offs, but they won’t shy away from the challenge of the Scottish side in Saturday’s semi-final.

While the Giants were sneaking past the Coventry Blaze at the SSE Arena, at the same time the Stars were stunning the second-seeded Sheffield Steelers with a third-period comeback to set up the tie this weekend.

Outside of the Steelers and Cardiff Devils, the Stars are the only side in the Elite League to beat the Giants more than once this season, with Beskorowany cutting a rather frustrated figure after a 4-3 overtime loss at the Dundee Ice Arena in February.

But with only two games standing between the Giants and a Grand Slam, the 31-year-old insists they won’t be thrown off by their bogey team.

“They were probably the one team I didn’t want to face this weekend!” he laughed.

“They’ve got a good team, they’ve got a goalie who can steal games and we know they’re going to come in with a lot of energy after beating Sheffield but I’m really looking forward to the challenge.”

The Canadian goaltender also has a score to settle in Nottingham having missed out on a Grand Slam three years ago when the Giants were beaten in the final by the Devils having already won the Elite League and Challenge Cup, just like this year.

“We’re going to come out and prepare like we did last time and use that experience for next weekend and set up a one-off game for the title,” he added.

“It’s a do-or-die for us now.”
