Belfast Giants fan favourite is named new captain
The Belfast Giants have named a new captain for the new season - and there could be no more fitting a candidate.
Blair Riley may only have joined the Giants one year ago but he didn't take long to find his way into supporters' affections as he was voted as Most Valuable Player by the Giants fans at the annual awards night.
Now he will become the ninth player to Captain the team this Saturday night, when the Giants host the Guildford Flames at the SSE Arena in the first Elite League game of the season.
"It's time to get into the league play," said Riley. "The guys have had three games under their belts working towards these important games this weekend. For myself, it's time to get conditioned up and i'm ready to get out there with the team."
With the Giants finishing second in the Elite League standings in 2016/17, the Captain knows how important points are at this early stage of the season.
"Sounds like there will be big crowd coming out to support the boys," he said. "It's the first league game which is a sprint to the finish. We know how important the teams are from the get-go. We want to get off to a good start and put on a show for the fans."
Saturday's games against the Guildford Flames also offers the Giants a chance to get onto winning ways after picking up a point in last weekend's Challenge Cup defeat to the Dundee Stars.
"The last couple of weeks we have really been working on our pace and getting up and down the ice sheet," continued Riley. "We want to be a puck possession team and a fast skating team. We've been stressing that this week. Obviously we still had things to work on from the weekend so we will make the adjustments and improve as we go along."
Tickets for Saturday evening's home game are available on Ticketmaster.
