Belfast Giants in heaven with seven

By Stuart McKinley

Every ingredient that is needed to win a league title was on display from the Belfast Giants last night as they fired a magnificent seven goals past a shell-shocked Dundee Stars team.

The immense firepower that Doug Christiansen's team possesses was there for all to see - as the scoreline proves.

There was, however, much more to the win than just the goals.

When the Giants needed to be strong in defence they were and they showed that they've got plenty of fight in them too - literally.

When Benoit Doucet's double had the Giants 2-0 up within the first five minutes it looked like being a long night for Dundee.

They responded through ex-Giant Jeff Hutchins at 11:32, but went on to record just two shots in the second period - despite seven minutes of a powerplay - and three in the third.

Tom Dignard was hit with a five minute penalty just six seconds after hitting the ice after being in the box for two minutes, but the penalty wasn't just killed, the Giants absolutely buried it.

Every available player was used during the seven minutes as they squeezed the life out of Dundee and with a bit more composure in front of the net the Giants could have grabbed a short-handed goal.

Dignard didn't return to the ice though as referee Mike Hicks handed him a game misconduct penalty, but he will be back to face Coventry Blaze at the Odyssey tonight.

It took a powerplay for the Giants to break Dundee's resistance in the third period, but then the goals flowed, with four scored in the space of nine minutes.

Craig Peacock's shot spun up off the crossbar, but the danger wasn't cleared and seconds later Jeff Mason sent the puck into the slot and Pelle flicked it into the net backhanded to take his tally to five goals in just two appearances.

All 10 skaters where then involved in a mass melee in front of the Giants tunnel after Dundee's Ross McIntosh sent Pelle into the air with a late hit. McIntosh was kicked out of the game and five other players - three from Dundee and two from Belfast - were given two minute penalties for roughing.

Hutchins joined them in the box before their time was up and Peacock netted on the powerplay and 12 seconds after the puck dropped after that goal Robert Dowd pulled out a stunning shot from just inside the blue line that flew into the net.

Daryl Lloyd fired home the seventh at 55:15 as the Giants slipped through the gears in the final period.

Hutchins' night ended early after a fight with Adam Keefe and it's probably safe to say he'll won't do that again.
