Belfast Giants open season with victory over Dundee
The Belfast Giants won on opening night at The SSE Arena with a 4-1 victory over the Dundee Stars in Friday’s Challenge Cup clash.
Goals from Shields, Vandermeer, Johner and Swindlehurst and a stellar performance in net from Stephen Murphy kept up the Giants 100% record in Challenge Cup Group B.
Colin Shields broke the deadlock on opening night when he squeezed the puck home, picking up a rebound from Paul Swindlehurst’s effort after only 63 seconds.
Jim Vandermeer doubled the hosts lead at 18:16 with a nice unassisted finish from the wing.
40 seconds later and Dustin Johner extended the Giants lead once again, unassisted, when he skated the puck into the Stars zone after winning the puck back while the hosts were shorthanded.
The Stars pulled one back in the middle period when Francois Bouchard netted on the powerplay, assisted by Shawn Boutin, at 34:36.
Paul Swindlehurst rounded off the Giants scoring at 4:25 into the final period, assisted by Francis Beauvillier and Dustin Johner, to ensure a third win from three games in the 2018/19 season.
Final Score: Belfast Giants 4-1 Dundee Stars
Giants Man of the Match: #31 Stephen Murphy
