Cam Knight is excited to join the Belfast Giants

New Belfast Giants defenceman Cam Knight has admitted he was delighted to get the chance to join the team for the upcoming season after being denied the opportunity a year ago.

The 26-year-old, from Reading, Massachusetts, moves to the Elite League from Danish side Esbjerg Energy having signed a one-year deal with the Giants for the 2021-22 campaign.

Knight is coming off a season where he was ranked the second-best powerplay defenceman in the Danish Metal Ligaen, finishing the campaign with four goals and 21 points in 32 games for the Energy.

An offensively-minded player who is a smooth skater and can command the blue-line, the University of Alabama-Huntsville graduate is likely to adopt a similar role at the SSE Arena this season and will presumably be on one of the Giants’ powerplay units.

Knight revealed he had initial talks about moving to Belfast last year before the Giants’ season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but he admitted he’s excited to get another bite at the cherry one year on.

“I was ecstatic,” said Knight of the moment he heard the Giants were still interested for this year.

“Belfast was definitely top of my list and when Keefer (head coach Adam Keefe) reached out to me, I sat down with my family and it was really a no-brainer.

“I had heard so many great things about the city, about the league, about the fans. It’s a great opportunity for me and I’m very excited. The Giants have a history of winning and they average one of the highest attendances in the league.

“I get the chills just thinking about it. It’s going to be unbelievable with fans in the rink again. It’s what we play for, we love to hear the fans — there’s really nothing better and I’m sure the atmosphere is going to be unbelievable on that first night.”

Giants fans can also thank a former favourite at the SSE Arena for his influence in bringing Knight to Belfast, with ex-winger Jordan Smotherman giving the defenceman the sales pitch over the summer.

“I played with (Smotherman) in Denmark — he’s a great guy and he spoke very highly of the organisation, the city of Belfast and the fans,” explained Knight.

“He was a big part of my decision to come here.”
