Classy Saviano helps Belfast Giants see off Steelers at SSE Arena

The Belfast Giants defeated the Sheffield Steelers 2-1 on Saturday night in Belfast.

Steve Saviano’s classy finish at 52:45 gave the Giants an important win against conference rivals the Steelers. Jackson Whistle was impressive in the Giants net, turning away 37 shots in a man of the match performance

It was the Captain Blair Riley who opened the scoring for the Giants after 72 seconds. The goal came after good work from Sebastien Sylvestre with the forward skating the puck into the Steelers zone and then cooly picking out Riley at the back post.

The Steelers had the better of the middle period and they equalised at 23:22 when Matt Marquardt netted on the powerplay, assisted by Mark Matheson and Miika Franssila.

The play of the game came at 52:45 when Steve Saviano finished off a nice move of his own making - taking the puck past the Steelers defence and slotting past Mustukovs in the Sheffield net. Jackson Whistle and the Giants defence put on a superb display in the closing minutes of the game as they stonewalled the Steelers to help claim the important home win.

Final Score:

Belfast Giants 2-1 Sheffield Steelers

Giants Man of the Match:

#1 Jackson Whistle
