Dustin Johner joins the Belfast Giants
The Stena Line Belfast Giants have announced the arrival of Dustin Johner for the 2017/18 Elite League season.
The 5ft 11 forward arrives in Belfast from Villacher SV following two seasons with the Austrian Hockey League side.
From Saskatchewan in Canada, Johner was selected by the Florida Panthers in the 2001 NHL Draft. The 34-year-old played 57 AHL and 198 ECHL games before moving to Europe for the 2007/08 season to sign for the Zurich Lions.
He won the Swiss A League championship with the Lions and then joined Innsbruck and Heilbronner in consecutive seasons.
Johner spent five successful seasons in Sweden’s Allsvenskan posting 106 goals and 108 assists, good for 214 points in 278 games. He won promotion with Vaxjo Lakers in 2010/11 and again in 2013/14 with Djurgardens. In 2014/15 he led the league in powerplay goals with 17 while with Vasteras.
His Austrian Hockey League totals with Villacher were 33 goals and 45 assists, good for 78 points in 119 games.
Johner will wear #83 in the 2017/18 season, becoming the first Giant to do so.
Head Coach Adam Keefe said: “Johner is one of those guys that no matter who you speak to about him, they have nothing but positive things to say - as a player, person and teammate.”
“We are really excited to add a player of Dustin's pedigree to the Belfast Giants. He's another new signing that will leave it all out on the ice for this city.”
