Gleed glee as Belfast Giants grab star
Belfast Giants coach Doug Christiansen’s speedy approach has paid off after he last night captured one of the top defencemen in the American Hockey League.
Christiansen wanted Canadian Jon Gleed so much that he rushed through a contract offer in an attempt to beat off the competition.
“He had the best reviews of any player that I have signed in four years as a coach,” said Christiansen of the 26-year-old, who last season played for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
“On the same day that I got his reviews I offered him a contract and I have never done that before. That’s how much I wanted him and the big thing that I was able to offer him was the chance to come to Europe.”
Christiansen, however, has missed out on bringing Owen Fussey from Edinburgh after he agreed a deal with Coventry Blaze.
“I would have liked to have signed Owen, but we will look for someone with similar quality,” he added.
