Forward David Goodwin continued his excellent spell in front of goal and came up big in the final period to hand the Belfast Giants a 4-2 win over Elite League leaders the Sheffield Steelers at the SSE Arena.

The winger scored at 11:08 of the third frame for the game-winner, depositing the rebound after Mark Garside's shot from the high slot was batted back into the crease by Steelers netminder Tomas Duba.

It's the American forward's fourth goal in as many games as he maintains his hot scoring streak, with winger Elgin Pearce wrapping up the victory with an empty-netter five seconds from the final buzzer for his fifth goal since joining last month.

The victory sees the Giants improve to 20-11-2 on the season, with netminder Shane Owen making 39 saves in picking up the man of the match, and they are now just five points off the Steelers at the top of the standings with two games in hand.

Rickard Palmberg got his third goal in his last three games by grabbing the Giants' second in a frantic end to the first period, striking on the powerplay with David Phillips in the box for roughing to give the Giants the 2-1 lead with just 11 seconds left in the opening frame.

The Steelers had actually taken the lead when Nikolai Lemtyugov struck at 18:32 of the first, only for Belfast winger Bobby Farnham to tie it up for the hosts at 1-1 just seconds later.

Palmberg then put Adam Keefe's side 2-1 up heading in at the first intermission, however they couldn't capitalise on their lead, and a fairly quiet middle period finally saw some action with just 2:26 remaining as Sheffield tied it up again at 2-2.

This time Lemtyugov turned provider as he set up defenceman Josef Hrabal for the finish for the leveller, ripping one past a partially unsighted Owen.

But the Giants won the final period, Owen making some massive saves to keep Sheffield off the scoreboard, allowing Goodwin to snatch the winner by putting in the rebound right on the doorstep, with Pearce rolling in the decisive blow at 19:55 to secure a massive two points for the hosts in the title race.
